Travel through time in the historical tour to the northern Ethiopian highlands. Starting from Bahir Dar and the source of the Blue Nile river, be enchanted in Gondar with the castles built by the Kings of Ethiopia over 400 years ago, enjoy an unforgettable trekking day at the Simien Mountains National Park. End up your journey in Lalibela with its stunning eleven rock-hewn churches, considered as one of the Eight Wonders of the World. Aside from the architectural skills proved by Ethiopians through time, these historical tours will allow you to enjoy the lifestyle of the charming local tribes and the marvelous wildlife.
Itinerary
Days 1
Fly to Bahir Dar. Visit the local market and take a boat trip on the Lake Tana to visit the monasteries of the Zege Peninsula. In the afternoon, drive to the Blue Nile Falls for a hike in the surroundings. Overnight in Bahir Dar (hotel).
Days 2
Drive to Gondar and visit the UNESCO Royal Enclosure, a group of castles from the 17th century. In the afternoon, visit the DebreBirhan Selassie church and the Fasilide’s pool area. Overnight in Gondar (hotel).
Days 3
Gondar-Simien mountains national park Early in the morning, depart for the stunning Simien Mountains National Park. The jagged mountains and deep valleys lend spectacular views to these mountains, home to many of the endemic animal species of Ethiopia including the gelada baboon (guaranteed to be seen) as well as the rare Walia ibex and Ethiopian wolf. The afternoon will be available for hikes in the area surrounding the lodge. Overnight at the Simien.
Days 4
After some excursion in the park drive to Gonder & Fly to Lalibela in the afternoon visit the rock-hewn churches, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Overnight in Lalibela (hotel).
Days 5
Drive to YemherhannaKristos, a rock-caved church located 42 km away from Lalibela afternoon visit the remaining churches. Overnight in Lalibela (hotel).
Days 6
Fly to Addis Ababa with time to do some souvenir shopping or sightseeing. In the evening, farewell dinner at a traditional restaurant with local dancers and musicians representing some of the country’s ethnic groups. Transfer to airport for departure. End of the tour.
The North Classic Tour is usually an itinerary of 6 to 12 days. It can be combined with other tour packages.
